This project involved the construction of a day care disability centre in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford for patients with severe and profound disabilities on a green-field section of the existing St. John’s Hospital healthcare campus on the outskirts of Enniscorthy. We provided mechanical and electrical design and supervision services. These include ventilation, cold water services, geothermal hot water system, underfloor heating system with geothermal heat pumps, general electrical services, normal and emergency lighting installations, external lighting, fire detection and alarm system, and CATV. We also provided for site services such as ESB, Eircom, mains water and gas.
Hayes Higgins provided full mechanical and electrical design and supervision services. The design was developed in close partnership with the HSE, centre management team and end-users. The approach catered for vulnerable clients with recessed services maximizing circulation space and reducing the risk of interaction with edges and obstacles. Recessed multi-hue lighting schemes were also used in particular areas to promote a calming environment for clients.
The needs of management were also met through the implementation of easy to use controls, versatile control strategies, low energy designs for lower operating costs and easily maintained services supported by comprehensive, clearly laid out hand-over documentation.
As a key member of the professional design team with specialist knowledge in building fabric heat losses Hayes Higgins drove the design towards specifying a building that had a far superior energy performance than the standard HSE building at the time of design. This was the first building the HSE’s South Eastern Inventory to achieve a B1 standard. This was achieved by carrying out detailed u-value calculations and working closely with the Architect to specify the thermodynamic properties of the various building fabric elements within the structure.
Hayes Higgins worked closely with all shareholders throughout the design, construction and post-occupancy period to ensure the project programme remained unaffected by the various project constraints. In particular Hayes Higgins provided diligent overview of the contractor deliveries, operations and communication strategies to ensure no conflict emerged with the live healthcare campus that would affect either construction works or the campus operation.
