Hayes Higgins Partnership were appointed to undertake the Civil & Structural design works though planning, tender and construction stages for the construction of a 36 classroom school extension at St. Patrick National School, Corduff, Dublin 15. The school is to remain “live” for the duration of the project. The existing school building is to remain fully in use throughout the duration of phase 1 of the project. Once phase 1 was completed the students were relocated to the classrooms constructed as part of phase 1. It is now intended to demolish a large portion of the existing school with phase 2 of the project consisting of the refurbishment of the retained structure and the construction of a large link structure containing further classrooms between phase 1 and existing school building.

Design undertaken by HHP includes:

  • Existing school building surveyed and any defects observed to be refurbished before new construction works begin.

  • Design of foul & surface water drainage including liaising with local authority during planning stage to ensure compliance with overall drainage strategy for the area.

  • Production of civil & structural drawings to form part of the planning permission submission.

  • Production of civil & structural drawings & specifications for inclusion in tender package.

  • Removal of internal loadbearing walls within existing school to allow for connection to new school developments.(Temporary propping to also designed while modification works are taking place)

  • Demolition of a portion of the existing school

  • Design of  new R.C foundations and ground floor slab

  • Design of load bearing blockwork at ground and 1st floor level.

  • Design of precast concrete floor slab units at 1st and roof level

  • Design of all handrail & balustrade fixings

  • Design to take into account requirements of disproportionate collapse regulations.

  • Design of large overground carpark.

  • Production of civil & structural drawings & specifications to be issued to the contractor at construction stage.

  • Production of steel rebar schedules.

  • Attendance at site meeting in addition to site visits to inspect the installation of key structural items.

  • Liaising with design team & contractor throughout duration of project.

  • Issue certificates of completion in addition to compliance with building control regulations
